Last week VA Comp students began setting up their Weebly Portfolios. This is a requirement for students who will be receiving high school credit at the end of the year. These portfolios will not only show off each students art works throughout the year, but will also be a place where students will upload common assessments, process, and critiques.
In the art studio this week, students have been working hard on their color wheel compositions and learning how to use and properly maintain different paint mediums. I can't wait to show off these fantastic works of art!

Today the VA COMP students have begun their second lesson/project. Within this lesson students are combining color theory, value, and mixed media techniques to create their own self portraits. Students have also brainstormed words that describe themselves and their world to add to their artworks...but it's not as easy as it would seem. Students will learn that their words and values must be created backwards as they transfer and transform their ideas into a work of art.
Friday we will be going outside for a fun Friday activity and a lesson on aesthetics/aesthetic experiences. Remember...sometimes the experience/process of creating an artwork is more important than the finished product! This week we have begun to take a look at one point/two point perspectives and how surrealist artists create "dreamlike" or unreal worlds in their artworks. Students have been practicing the difference between one and two point perspectives to choose for their first surrealist perspective project. We have also taken a look at how surrealism can be created through juxtaposition, scale, levitation, dislocation and transparency of the objects within a work. I'm excited to see which strategy each student will choose as they combine their ideas on surrealism and perspective!
Welcome back students! This week in the VA COMP class students are reviewing the elements and principles of design as they create their in class sketch books. Students will need to obtain their own sketchbook to perform outside studio hours and sketchbook assignments within. This will be due next Tuesday. Students should also research the lyrics to one of their favorite songs and type/write them out for a future art project.
